Our Story
Hi, I’m Andreea, the founder of Within Enlightenment.
I’ve always been a creator at heart. I’m training as an architect, drawn from the very beginning to designing things that make life better and change the way we live. But my path runs deeper than design. I’m a carrier and quiet guardian of sacred plant medicine, an artist of sound and frequency, and someone profoundly connected to the body, to nature, and to spirit. My work is about helping people come home to themselves.
This brand didn’t begin with a plan or a design.
It started with my own skin.
When I first fell in love with yoga, my body kept turning against me. After class, my skin would flare red, hot, and raised across my stomach, my back, my chest and neck. It didn’t make sense. I was doing something meant to heal me, and my body was on high alert.
The problem wasn’t me. It was the plastic. The mats I practiced on were PVC and synthetic foam, and even the towel I laid over them was woven from plastic fibers. I was pressed against plastic on both sides, every single session.
So I went looking for something my body could trust, and something kinder to the earth I was trying to feel closer to. That’s how I found cork, harvested from the bark of the cork oak without ever cutting down the tree. No plastic, no synthetic coatings. A warm, living surface my body finally felt at peace on.
That search became something deeper. I had set out to understand the true meaning and purpose of life, and even in my hardest moments, in the shadows, I found a flicker of light. “In the darkness, you will find the light” became my mantra. With each sage smudge, each breath of Palo Santo, each crystal held in my hand, the confusion lifted, and truth began to reveal itself gently, one moment at a time.
Within Enlightenment was born from this lived experience, part physical, part spiritual. Every mat we make is the one I wished I’d had at the very beginning: cork over a natural rubber tree base, free of the materials that once left me covered in rashes. Conscious tools for people who want to move, breathe, and heal without their practice working against them.
Rooted in regeneration: cork is harvested without felling the tree, a harvested cork oak absorbs up to 5× more CO₂ as it regrows, and your mat is fully free of the PVC and petroleum foams found in conventional mats.
This isn’t just a product to me. It’s personal, and every mat that leaves us carries that intention: that your practice should never cost you your wellbeing, or the planet’s.
